‘Commander Keen’ mobile game: the ultimate fusion of PVP, deck building, and platforming action

"It's time to kick some asteroid! Commander Keen returns in an all-new mobile adventure from ZeniMax Online Studios. Play as Billy and his twin sister Billie as they race to save the galaxy with their zany collection of gadgets and a whole lot of attitude."

Commander Keen was part of a big push by Bethesda Softworks for mobile versions of its many IPs. The company had seen success with other franchises in Elder Scrolls: Blades and Fallout: Shelter, with the latter being ported to consoles and PC. Elder Scrolls: Blades has recently come out of early access and had also been released on the Nintendo Switch. After years of dormancy the announcement of a new take Commander Keen was met with very little fanfare. The games' focus on using cards to move and attack as well as turn based combat was a drastic departure from the side scrolling and platforming the series has been known for.

‘Commander Keen’ returns in a new mobile game from ZeniMax Online and Bethesda

After wrapping up news on their Elder Scrolls Online game, Zenimax Online Studios revealed a new game they are working on: Commander Keen. Based on the classic id Software PC series, this new online Commander Keen takes on the zany style of Saturday morning cartoons and the design of mobile games.

Commander Keen is a classic side-scrolling adventure series that began nearly three decades ago, first as an episodic series, then as a full release in 1990 on PC from developer id Software. Now, it's coming back as yet another free-to-play mobile game from Bethesda which killed any potential hype for it.

Bethesda made a few odd choices during their E3 2019 presentation, the first being having employees (or someone on their side) scream-cheering every possible game title and bit of news, including the awkward stuff surrounding Fallout 76 and the weirdly large amount of focus spent on mobile titles. They weren't reading the room or online reaction.

This focus on the free-to-play dilution of Bethesda brands into disappointing mobile games is not helping the company's reputation, especially in the wake of Fallout 76 which they tried to play off by continually thanking fans and begging them to come back. They do make money though on mobile though, so expect more of this from Bethesda. It's just a weird thing to see at E3, and to see everyone dancing around the issues and reactions to these titles.

Bethesda has revealed a brand new title Commander Keen for mobile devices and according to the studio, the game will arrive soon. In this mobile adventure, Command Keen returns back in action as both the genius twins Billie and Billy strive to save Dadmiral Keen who has been kidnapped.

Along with the reveal trailer, Bethesda also revealed a short gameplay trailer for the game which gives us a little bit of heads up on what to expect from this upcoming mobile game. Apart from a single player story mode, Commander Keen will also come with an online PvP mode where players will duke it out with each other.

It looks like it is going to be a solid title when it comes out. Bethesda has not revealed a confirmed release date for the title at this point but the trailer mentions that the game will be released on mobile devices soon. Other announcements from Bethesda at E3 2019 included the release date for Doom Eternal, Wastelanders Expansion for Fallout 76 and a brand new game called Ghostwire: Tokyo which looks very weird.

In terms of what was at the conference, we learned the latest and saw a number of trailers for a variety of games, including Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76 (getting a free trial and a battle royale mode called Nuclear Winter), and Elder Scrolls Blades, the latter of which is coming to Nintendo Switch with cross-save. We've also got a new game in the form of Commander Keen for mobile, a follow-up to one of id software's earliest games, and a new game from Tango Gameworks called Ghostwire Tokyo--a horror mystery game.

Though we're likely years away from seeing Elder Scrolls VI, the series is still very active thanks to games like The Elder Scrolls Online, Legends, and Blades. All three of these spin-offs received new updates for what was to come this year and beyond. First up, The Elder Scrolls Blades will release on the Nintendo Switch sometime in Fall 2019, and will feature cross-play with mobile versions of the game. The card-focused battle game Elder Scrolls Legends will also see a new update on June 27. Lastly, The Elder Scrolls Online will get a new DLC known as Dragonhold sometime in Fall of 2019, which will lead to new dungeon content.

"It's not really mandated in either direction," says Pete Hines, SVP of global marketing and communications. "It's about: What do you want to make and what does it line up with? We didn't go to ZOS [Zenimax Onine Studios] and say: 'You need to make a Commander Keen game, figure it out' [a mobile version of the classic IP was also announced at E3]. They said: 'Hey, nobody is doing anything with Commander Keen, we have an idea, can we do this? Here is what it would be.' It has to come from that direction as opposed to me mandating to Arkane that they have to do X or Y. They're like: 'This is what we want to do and we want to call it Deathloop.'"

2023: Double Fine Multiplayer, Forza Horizon 5, State of Decay 3, The Initiative Game (Part 2), Project Missouri, Fable, AAA Global Publishing Game, New Game from Acquired Studio (Asobo?), Gears 6, Starfield DLC, Avowed DLC, Roundhouse New IP, Arkane Austin DLC, Small game from Alpha Dog (mobile?), Mojang New Game. 2ff7e9595c
